Grain Producers SA, on behalf of Primary Producers SA, and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) are partnering to deliver a series of FREE Roadworthy Heavy Vehicles … Made Easy! workshops specifically to help SA primary producers understand heavy vehicle roadworthiness requirements.
The South Australian Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) has announced the introduction of a state-based scheme to inspect heavy vehicles for roadworthiness to address coroner recommendations following a series of fatal crashes.
These vehicles would not otherwise undergo any form of inspection in their lifetime unless issued with a defect notice through on-road compliance activities.
Stage one of the scheme, introduced in January 2017, requires heavy vehicles three years or older to be inspected when changing ownership, with 62 per cent of those inspected determined to be unroadworthy.
Stage two will expand on stage one requirements and will likely require certain heavy vehicles of more than 4.5 tonnes to undergo inspections every two years once they reach four years from the date of manufacture and inspected annually once they reach 10 years since manufacture.
The workshops are aimed at members of Primary Producers SA who own and operate their own heavy vehicles.
Theory workshops will be held to provide primary producers with:
An outline of the NHVR Heavy Vehicle Inspection Manual
- Road safety awareness
- Producer compliance and maintenance responsibilities
- Requirements of the regulator
- Possible changes that may be introduced to the scheme
In addition, all theory workshop participants have the opportunity to take part in a practical workshop to receive valuable hints and tips prior to their own heavy vehicle inspections starting.
Early registrants may have the opportunity to have their own vehicle’s roadworthiness checked for FREE as part of each practical workshop (spots are limited).
Primary producers who attend the workshops will receive training and knowledge which will be essential in helping them to develop a tailored approach to heavy vehicle maintenance, inspections and compliance on vehicles involved in their farm businesses.
