About this role

We are delighted to be assisting a newly established Commonwealth Agency to engage an EL1 Site Supervisor to help lead and shape the future of Australia’s expertise in innovative waste management.

The responsibilities include management and supervision of a Commonwealth owned site prior to commencement of construction activities in accordance with the health and safety guidelines set out by Departmental policy.   There will also be a requirement to assess hazards, determine risks, conduct regular inspections, and maintain safety programs and visitor records.

What you will be doing

  • Supervising workers, sub-contractors and work activities undertaken on and around the site by the Commonwealth, during the pre-construction phase
  • Conducting on-site inductions and WHS briefings with employees, contractors and visitors onsite.
  • Managing the overall security of the site including coordinating access for suppliers, stakeholders, monitors and reporting any incidents or issues with the site.
  • Conducting regular site inspections including assessing risks and hazards to ensure compliance with relevant legal requirements, processes, and procedures.
  • Reviewing and maintain the Site Operating Procedures manuals, including ensuring that site rules are in place and adhered to.
  • Stakeholder liaison and interaction and training off-site.
  • Assessing and managing any potential safety hazards on and around the site.
  • Maintaining and managing an excellent working relationship with the previous landowner and surrounding neighbors to the site, including managing any relevant requirements set out in Land Access Agreement.
  • Other Site Supervisor related activities as required.

The right person will have

  • Previous site management experience within a construction, civil engineering or other related activity.
  • Ability to work with independence, subject to limited direction against established priorities, practices, and methodologies to deliver quality outcomes.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, in particular the demonstrated ability to provide sound advice and prepare written reports and briefings.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills that foster trust and cooperation, and a proven ability to work effectively and with integrity within a politically sensitive environment.
  • Ability to work in a fluid environment, remaining flexible, agile and adaptable to support colleagues at short notice.
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to be client-focused when dealing with colleagues, suppliers and members of the wider community.
  • An understanding of environmental management principles.
  • Ability to quickly build a wide contextual understanding of the project and to provide factual information to members of the community.

It is also desirable that the successful person will hold –

  • Relevant certifications/qualifications in workplace health and safety, training delivery, remote area first aid, site hazard and risk management practices.
  • A construction industry ‘White Card’  –  which can be obtained upon commencement.
  • A baseline security clearance.
