About the role

Reporting to the Manager Steel Products, the primary focus of this role is to develop best practice in all areas of Steel Products and associated services like Energy, Water, Operations, Safety, and Maintenance. Best practice will be achieved via the sharing of technical information, experience, and development resources, best practice reviews, and process audits.

Accountable for developing and mentoring technical teams to become process subject matter experts, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Improving the technical skill base of the teams to improve problem solving capability and drive technical improvement
  • Developing team networks through wider experiences on site and in other plants
  • Assist Operations/Maintenance/Technology departments to improve operating performance by implementing well defined operating practices, asset management, and auditing the process against ‘benchmark’ performance
  • Establishing targeted programs to recruit, mentor, train and encourage new and early career staff
  • Benchmark productivity, OPEX, and risk for Liberty Primary Steel, Steel Products operations
  • Implementing and driving a culture of continuous improvement supported best practices manufacturing excellence model as it applies to technology activities
  • Manage the water treatment contract for Liberty Primary Steel, Steel Products steelworks site

About your experience

Our ideal candidate will embody the ability to model and promote the values of family, sustainability, and change. As a subject matter expert in steel manufacturing, particularly hot rolling, you will possess solid working knowledge of all aspects of the technology associated with the integrated steelmaking process.

You also have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Mechanical, Metallurgy, Materials or Chemical Engineering with additional postgraduate study highly desirable
  • Extensive industry experience working in integrated steelmaking, with demonstrated capability operating at a management level
  • Solid IT proficiency, SAP experience highly regarded
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Previous experience in building team capability and coaching for the long term
  • Sound understanding of manufacturing methodologies and improvement processes

A member of the GFG Alliance group, Liberty Primary Steel is located at Whyalla, South Australia, approximately 400 kilometres north-west of Adelaide. We operate an integrated steelworks including steel making, blast furnace, coke oven and rolling mill facilities.
